10 TIPS - Find the right Voice Teacher for you

Updated: Jul 21, 2022

There are thousands of Voice Teachers & Vocal Coaches out there…. How can you find someone who can help you achieve your goals and get your desired results?

My 10 Tips are listed below:

1) Make sure you understand what your goals are, so you can find the correct type of Voice Teacher or Coach for you.

2) Make sure you know if the teacher that you have in mind, is a Voice Teacher, a Vocal Coach or Both, by checking out their work on social media, from previous clients, or by contacting them.

(Usually a Voice Teacher helps you learn how to use your voice correctly, and works with you on eliminating any vocal problems with different techniques. A Vocal Coach on the other hand, usually helps advanced clients and focuses on specific repertoire, stage presence, expression, artistry etc. Of course, many Voice Teachers are both a teacher and a coach, including myself, even if they present themselves as one of those two terms.)

3) Check their Qualifications / Skills / Education. Does the Voice Teacher have Singing & Performance experience? Does he/she have a music background, a music / singing degree or teaching experience? All these matters should be considered while trying to find a well established Voice Teacher.

4) Find out about, which genre the Voice Teacher specializes in. Of course most teachers are able to help their clients with various genres, but having similar music interests is a plus to the collaboration.

5) Think about distance & budget. If the studio is too far away, then logically, many lesson cancellations will follow, and you wont be able to get the desired results, if you don’t attend to your regular weekly sessions.

(Each Voice teacher has a different price, for various reasons. Find a Voice Teacher, that you can afford and never ask someone to lower their price for you. Of course you can ask if they have any current special offers at that moment, but if a Voice Teacher is too expensive, there is a reason. A Voice Teacher sets a price according to quantity, quality, knowledge, experience, time, space, equipment, level and preparation).

6) Check if the teacher, works with clients of any age and any level (beginner, intermediate, advanced), or if they work with specific types of clients.

7) It is also important for your progress, that the teacher creates a safe and pleasant atmosphere to make you feel comfortable. Trust and safety are the keys to a successful collaboration.

8) Make sure that the teacher individualises the approach for each client. Of course the teacher will use a similar structure of their lesson planning, with mutual exercises and techniques between clients, but each voice and character is different, so the teacher must be able to find solutions for every type of voice.

9) Make sure the voice teacher is aware of Vocal Health, the correct production of sound, techniques, and encourages you and explains to you, how to be careful and take care of your Voice.

10) Make sure you are not paying for a Karaoke Session. A singing lesson does not mean singing songs a couple of times and moving on to the next one. If you only do, sing alongs and don’t warm up, don’t do exercises, don’t work on parts of the songs that are challenging or don’t work on improving your voice and identity as a singer in various ways, then that is a red flag and you should seek elsewhere.

I hope this helps you find the perfect Voice Teacher for you !
